Karlstad, Sweden Visit
8-12 December 2010
On the 8th December four representatives from Scoil Íde travelled to Sweden with teachers and staff from Italy. Ms. Ní Odhráin, Ms. Costelloe, Ms. Downey and Ms. Dempsey made the journey over and brought back many stories to our school. The trip was based around a primary school in Karlstad, Sweden called Stodeneskolan where they spent most of their time.

During the day they had a great time exploring the classrooms and interacting with the children. The children showed them all the work they do and even taught them some Swedish phrases. The teachers got a chance to play hockey with some of the children and helped in the woodwork room where the children were busy working away. The children in the Swedish school were delighted to learn some Irish phrases and many of the children were counting to ten in Irish before they left!
The school were celebrating a special feast day in December to remember Sankta Lucia. The teachers attended a special ceremony in the school and in the Church in the evening to celebrate this with many of beautiful hymns and a ceremony of light.

The children in the school get a hot lunch there every day and the school had their special Christmas dinner that week so the teachers got to taste some of their festive foods such as fried potatoes with fish, salads, meatballs and many more.

The evenings were spent tasting some Swedish culture around the town and interacting with all the teachers from the different countries. This was an opportunity to engage with the teachers and find out more about education and lifestyles in their countries.
All the schools exchanged Christmas cards and gifts to bring back to their schools and we were very proud of all the children in Scoil Íde for making such beautiful cards to give to the other schools.
